100Kin10 Project Team: Supporting STEM Education in Tribal Communities (2019-2022)

January-June 2019

This Project Team's goal is to explore how to support STEM teaching and learning in tribal communities.

Tribal Nations have recognized the need to integrate STEM education into formal and informal learning for Indigenous students and communities. This team is interested in exploring and supporting this need, and in addition, centering historically underrepresented Indigenous perspectives into STEM instruction. Some team members have begun to identify needs via a previous Project Team (Supporting STEM Education in Rural Communities) and would like to continue to build on this work by exploring how to adapt it with tribal communities.

Tactical goals for this project will be determined collaboratively as a team, but the vision is to create something useful and relevant for team members working with tribal communities to support STEM education and workforce development.

January-June 2020

The team has started a collection to be used in various ways with both Tribal students as well as with educators who work with Indigenous students in formal and informal settings. The collection is not complete, or static, since input from Tribal Nations is imperative to the collection. When travel is allowed again, we hope to share our resources with Tribal Leaders and add their expertise and best practices.

February-May 2021

This Community came together to explore and support the need to integrate STEM education into formal and informal learning for Indigenous students, as well as center historically underrepresented Indigenous perspectives into STEM instruction.

September-December 2021

This continuing Project Team is exploring how to support STEM teaching and learning in tribal communities. This cycle, the team is working on building a guide with considerations and first steps for STEM educators to start engaging with Tribal Communities.
