Theme: Value of S, T, and E

How might we ensure science, technology, and engineering are valued in schools?

Schools have traditionally placed a higher priority on the teaching and learning of reading and math over other subjects like science, technology, and engineering; and, there remains a perception in American society that not all students need to learn these subjects or can excel in the S, T, and E disciplines. Districts and schools can demonstrate the value and importance of STEM for all students by ensuring that all high schools offer a broad range of STEM course choices, including AP, IB, and other advanced courses; by providing teachers with ongoing PD in these subjects to ensure their instruction keeps pace with the rapid changes in these fields; and by communicating the importance of these subjects for all students. States also can play a role by adopting standards, including K-12 Computer Science standards, to ensure all students are taught the key content and principles of these disciplines.
